Healthy Athletes Initiative Introduced in Armenia

Special Olympics Headquarters organized Special Olympics Healthy Athletes Train-the-Trainer (TTT) session and screenings sessions which took place at the European Games in Warsaw, Poland from 16 – 23 September 2010. This event hosted health and allied health professionals from around the Europe Eurasia region who gathered to learn and share information on Special Olympics and the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes program.

Participants from over 20 countries participated in the TTT and assisted the Healthy Athletes screening clinics in the following disciplines: Health Promotion (healthy lifestyle), Opening Eyes (optometry), Special Smiles (dentistry), Fit Feet (podiatry), Fun Fitness (physiotherapy) and Healthy Hearing (audiology). The Healthy Athletes clinics screened over 50 % of the Athletes throughout the week of the Games.

For the first time, Special Olympics Armenian enrolled in the Healthy Athletes initiative. Our representative Dr. Armen Avagyan, Yerevan State Medical University professor of the Department of Child Dentistry, took part in the trainings followed by screenings. The training, which provided philosophy, education, and hands-on experience, has allowed Special Olympics Armenia to implement the Healthy Athletes screening program in our home country.

Special Olympics Armenia will be organizing dental screenings to its athletes starting from early 2011.
