World Games in Greece

NEW ACHIEVEMENTS AT THE WORLD GAMES

 

On June 20-July 04, 2011, Special Olympics Armenia delegation took part at the Special Olympics 13 World Summer Games. The event which took place in Athens, Greece, involved 170 programs, 7,000 athletes who competed in 22 Olympic-type sports, 3,000 coaches and 25,000 volunteers. Armenian athletes competed in athletes and aquatics (swimming).

 

Armenian team’s participation became possible as a result of the funding from the Government of Armenia, namely, the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs. Thanks to this support, the Armenian team of eight representatives participated at the Games and came back with victories.

 

The Armenian Ambassador in Greece Mr. Gagik Ghalachyan met the Armenian team at the Athens airport. Prior to the official opening of the Games, our delegation was hosted in Kavala, where local volunteers of Armenian origin accompanied the athletes and provided daily support. The team visited Ararat Armenian Sports Club where they received a warm welcome and dinner.

 

Armenian special athlete 19-year-old Suren Balasanyan who competed in 50 m run and softball throw, won a 1st place – a gold medal and a 2nd place – bronze medal. Spartak Hakobyan won a silver and a bronze medal in long jump and 200 m run. Swimmer Nona Aroyan won a silver medal in backstroke swimming, and Tigran Gevorgyan got a silver medal in backstroke and a gold in freestyle. Our athletes experienced memorable games and a unique experience.
