Young Athlete Programme Showing Benefits in ARMENIA

"Young Athlete Programme has Transformed my Daughter"

SO Armenia is seeing the enormous benefits of their developing Young Athlete programme. Here is what mother of 7 year old Anahit Harutyunyan, has to say:

“From the very beginning, when I took part in parents’ seminar and afterwards talked to my daughter, I was surprised she expressed interest in training with kids she doesn’t know. The trainings went well. The impetus was the competitions. She was genuinely involved in the competitions and shared team spirit with the rest. The excitement was so high that when we went to her regular procedures with her physician and psychologist, she described in detail the way she felt. Both these specialists and I were amazed at how she was able to describe the activity and her feelings in words, as she always used to say either ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to any question before”.

The “Peace Planet” Kindergarten in Yerevan was the site of Young Athletes™ competitions on 28-29 April that were organized by Special Olympics Armenia.  Forty children between the ages of 5 and 7 with and without intellectual disabilities participated in the event that was meant to show how inclusion can work in a simple and fun way for children.  About 20 parents and 10 educators were present at the event.  Six volunteers were involved in organizing and running the events.  The Peace Planet gym was decorated with Special Olympics banners and the children, coaches and volunteers wore Young Athletes branded T-shirts.

On March 10th SOEE conducted a Young Athlete Programme in Armenia which was followed by the YA competitions from April 28-29th with 40 children between the ages of 5-7 with and without intellectual disabilities competing.
